The Birth of Pure Abstraction on Museumplein
Permanent Collection Highlight · 1st Floor Weissman Wing
Amsterdam was the crucible of De Stijl (The Style), one of the most influential avant-garde art and design movements in modern history. Founded in 1917 by Theo van Doesburg and Piet Mondrian, De Stijl sought a universal harmony by stripping visual art down to its purest fundamentals: straight horizontal and vertical lines, right angles, the three primary colors (red, yellow, blue), and three non-colors (black, white, gray).
The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam preserves one of the world’s most significant assemblies of De Stijl works. Visitors can trace Piet Mondrian’s (1872–1944) astonishing creative journey from conventional Dutch landscape painter to the prophet of neoplasticism, whose geometric grids forever reshaped graphic design, fashion, and global architecture.

Mondrian’s Masterpieces in Amsterdam
The Stedelijk’s collection provides an unparalleled visual narrative of Mondrian’s evolution:
- Early Dutch Naturalism & Symbolism (1890s–1910s): Discover his atmospheric river landscapes, windmills, and trees. Notice how the rhythmic repetition of apple tree branches gradually began to flatten and abstract natural forms into line and rhythm.
- The Paris Cubist Awakening (1911–1914): Inspired by Picasso and Braque, Mondrian fractured natural subjects into muted gray and ochre facets, steadily eliminating spatial depth.
- Pure Neoplasticism (1920s): Highlighted by Composition with Blue, Yellow, Red, Black, and Gray (1922). Here, balance is achieved through dynamic asymmetry—large blocks of white framed by sharp black lines, counterbalanced by intense saturations of yellow, red, and blue.
Mondrian believed this universal balance represented the spiritual order of the modern cosmos, offering peace and clarity to a world traumatized by World War I.
Gerrit Rietveld & Three-Dimensional De Stijl
What Mondrian achieved on flat canvas, Utrecht-born architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld (1888–1964) translated into three dimensions:

- The Red and Blue Chair (Rood-blauwe stoel, 1918): Perhaps the most iconic furniture design of the 20th century. Constructed from standard beechwood laths and two plywood boards, Rietveld left the joints overlapping to reveal how the chair was built, painting the planes in pure De Stijl primary colors with yellow end-grain accents.
- The Zig-Zag Chair (1934): A radical minimalist cantilever seat made of four wooden planks joined with dovetail joints, turning the conventional chair into a continuous dynamic Z-shape.
- Spatial Architecture: Explore archival sketches and models of the world-famous Rietveld Schröder House in Utrecht, the only building fully realized according to De Stijl principles.
Practical Tips for Your Visit
