The Birth of Suprematism: Zero of Form on Museumplein

Permanent Collection Landmark · 2nd Floor Avant-Garde Galleries

In December 1915 at the Last Futurist Exhibition of Paintings 0.10 in Petrograd, Kazimir Malevich (1879–1935) shattered centuries of art history. Proclaiming the liberation of art from the depiction of reality, he founded Suprematism—an artistic philosophy declaring the supremacy of pure feeling and geometric abstraction over recognizable objects.

Today, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam holds the largest and most important collection of Kazimir Malevich paintings and drawings outside Russia. This extraordinary ensemble of 29 seminal canvases offers visitors an unforgettable journey through the radical Russian avant-garde that transformed modern culture.

Key Masterpieces in the Amsterdam Collection

The Stedelijk Museum presents the full trajectory of Malevich revolutionary career:

Kazimir Malevich An Englishman in Moscow (1914) Cubo-Futurist masterpiece in the Stedelijk Museum
  1. An Englishman in Moscow (1914): A pinnacle of Alogist Cubo-Futurism. Malevich juxtaposes a dapper Englishman in a top hat with a glistening wooden spoon, a fish, a Russian church, and fragmented Cyrillic typography—deliberately disrupting logical reality to free the imagination.
  2. Suprematist Composition with Blue Triangle and Black Rectangle (1915): Painted during the explosive birth year of Suprematism. Geometry floats weightlessly against a pristine white void, evoking the limitless expanse of cosmic space.
  3. Suprematist Painting with Black Trapezium and Red Square (1915): Dynamic tension and visual speed created purely through intersecting geometric planes of black, red, and primary hues.
  4. The Late Figurative Period (1928–1932): When authorities suppressed the avant-garde, Malevich returned to figurative peasant motifs, but rendered them with haunting, faceless geometric forms that poignantly expressed the alienation of rural life.

The Dramatic Rescue: How the Works Came to Amsterdam

The story of how Malevich masterworks arrived at the Stedelijk is one of the most thrilling chapters in modern art history:

In 1927, Malevich traveled to Berlin for a major retrospective, bringing dozens of his most prized canvases. Urgently recalled to the Soviet Union, he entrusted the artworks to German architect Hugo Häring. When the totalitarian regime targeted avant-garde art, Häring secretly hid the canvases in rural Germany at immense personal risk.

In the 1950s, the visionary director of the Stedelijk Museum, Willem Sandberg, learned of the collection existence. Following years of delicate international negotiations, the City of Amsterdam acquired the collection in 1958, permanently securing these fragile monuments of avant-garde freedom for the global public.
