In 1927, Malevich traveled to Berlin for a major retrospective, bringing dozens of his most prized canvases. Urgently recalled to the Soviet Union, he entrusted the artworks to German architect Hugo Häring. In the 1950s, the visionary director of the Stedelijk Museum, Willem Sandberg, learned of the collection existence.
